Innovative Ethernet solutions for process automation in hazardous areas
Similar to developments in the production industry, process automation is also experiencing an increase in the trend towards Ethernet technology. The digitalisation accompanying the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the associated development of integrated network structures is already possible for hazardous areas, too, and further-reaching solutions are being developed.
Process automation in Zone 1: with fibre optics from R. STAHL
R. STAHL has long been using fibre optics with types of protection "op is" and "op pr" (IEC 60079-28) for the installation of Ethernet in Zone 1. "op is" in particular has proven its value with the IS1+ remote I/O, as it enables modifications, extensions and maintenance during operations in Zone 1 without having to switch off the network. A welcome additional bonus is that highly interference-free transmission is possible across distances of up to 30 kilometres. Installations with type of protection "op pr" make use of the Zone 1 splice cassette. An Ex e connection terminal tested specially for up to 1 GBit/s and with Zone 1 approval is available for installations with CAT cables.
Future-proof solutions: Ethernet-APL and 100BASE-TX-IS
In hazardous areas, future-proof subjects also include open concepts based on intrinsic safety.
R. STAHL is working together with other companies to develop new standards, such as Advanced Physical Layer (2-wire Ethernet APL, intrinsically safe with supply) and 100BASE-TX-IS (4-wire, intrinsically safe 100BASE-TX). We are constantly looking for new solutions for tomorrow's automation.
