Remote I/O IS1+ as an edge gateway for Zones 1 and 2

The R. STAHL Remote I/O IS1+ system is now also available for use as an edge gateway with a connection via OPC UA and optional integrated signal pre-processing

Alongside proven in use, conventional Remote I/O functionality, IS1+ is now also available for use as an edge gateway with a connection via OPC UA and optional integrated signal pre-processing. In this process, all diagnostics and device data are transmitted parallel to the supported communication protocols PROFIBUS DP, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP via OPC UA to superordinate systems, such as aggregation servers or cloud applications. This means that IS1+ can be used in modern system concepts such as NAMUR Open Architecture (NOA) for monitoring and optimisation functions using the second channel, and enables the use of these concepts in hazardous areas in Zone 1.

For brown field systems in particular, which often operate using PROFIBUS DP, IS1+ offers a simple migration path: While process control is still performed via PROFIBUS, all additionally available data from the system and connected field devices is transmitted via a second channel with Ethernet and OPC UA. The on-board support for all protocols means that the user can switch to an Ethernet protocol, such as PROFINET, at any time. New functions that are currently still in development, like PA-DIM or FDI for Remote I/O, can easily be retrofitted by performing a firmware update.

Thanks to the optional integration of software packages for signal processing, for instance an IEC 61131-3-compliant CODESYS runtime environment, even the latest concepts for modular automation with the Module Type Package (MTP) can be easily ported into hazardous areas in Zones 1 and 2. The combination of IS1+ and tools such as CODESYS opens up new possibilities when designing systems with simple logic functions and local signal pre-processing in Zone 1, particularly for machine building and package units. R. STAHL can provide support in this regard thanks to its extensive experience in the Remote I/O and couplings sectors, as well as its unique expertise regarding system solutions for hazardous areas.
