Prof. Dr. Thorsten Arnhold

VP Technology and Member of the IEC Board of Conformity Assessment (CAB)

What I do:
As Vice President of Technology, I am responsible for fundamental development, which primarily takes place in collaboration with external partners from universities and higher education institutions, as well as other research organisations like Fraunhofer. Alongside this, I represent Germany on the IEC Conformity Assessment Board and am a member of the DKE steering committee. As a university professor, I work at Heilbronn University, the Ernst-Abbe University of Applied Sciences in Jena and, as of late, the Dresden University of Technology.

What I enjoy:
I am always pleased to see how well our medium-sized business collaborates with the universities and higher education institutions I mentioned earlier. Not only because our joint research yields great results that we can use in our products, but also because it's an excellent, successful way to get young people interested in working at R. STAHL.

What I get up to outside work:
After work, I love to spend time with my family. I regularly exercise on my racing bike or mountain bike, or on the rowing machine in my conservatory, and I read a lot – particularly books on natural science.

Ingo Emde

Business Development Manager

What I do:
As part of the Business Development Team in the Automation business unit, my work is extremely varied. In my role as an HMI expert, I support the Sales team in the USA/Canada, Scandinavia and Middle East regions. Additionally, I provide global support for Sales in the oil and gas application sector, as well as maintaining contact with our internationally active customers in this industry. Yet another element of my work is to do with LNG. I contribute my knowledge of the technology, market and applications, and coordinate strategies, marketing activities and sales.

What I enjoy:
It's great to be part of a collaborative team with so much expertise in the explosion protection and automation sector. I enjoy impressing our customers – not just with our products, but with complete automation solutions from a single source. I also enjoy having the opportunity to help shape our digitalisation transformation.

What I get up to outside work:
My family is most important to me. In my spare time, I'm trying to improve my American BBQ and cooking skills – I particularly enjoy cooking for friends and family. I also love travelling, especially to the USA.

Horst Friedrich

Director of Product Marketing for HMIs and Cameras

What I do:
As the head of the product management, product marketing and documentation departments for HMIs and Cameras, I am responsible for the life cycle of the products – starting with the product specification, continuing with the creation of marketing documentation and content for the market launch, followed by sales monitoring and finally phasing out the product. This requires in-depth knowledge of the market and customer requirements, as well as the technology that is currently used and future technology.

What I enjoy:
Working with highly technical products, the continuously evolving technology in our sector, and the implementation of this technology in our products and services.

What I get up to outside work:
I enjoy relaxing on my (almost) daily bicycle rides before and after work. I also enjoy taking to the mountain bike trails in the highlands near my home. In the evenings, I love to cook and enjoy eating dinner with my family. Over long weekends and holidays, I like spending time windsurfing as well as cycling.

André Fritsch

Product Manager Automation

What I do:
Specification and marketing of products in the Remote I/O, fieldbus and Ethernet sectors, including strategic responsibility and sales support. This requires me to know the market and customer requirements in detail and to monitor technological trends.

What I enjoy:
The variety of tasks I perform and the continuous development of technology in our industry, such as Ethernet-APL, which is a hot topic at the moment. These trends, combined with the varied aspects of the specialist topic of explosion protection, mean that my work is never boring.

What I get up to outside work:
I am most relaxed when I cook for my wife and spend the evening with her. On holiday, particularly in Asia, diving provides me with the best possible form of relaxation.

Ann-Kathrin Heberer

Lecturer

What I do:
I speak at seminars about explosion protection, standardise our lectures and am a general "Jack of all trades" within our seminar team.

What I enjoy:
Interacting with the participants in my seminars – they come from so many different companies. You encounter new perspectives every time and never stop learning!

What I get up to outside work:
At the moment, my husband and I are renovating our home. Other than that, I enjoy reading – especially paper books, rather than e-books. I also love spending time with my children and extended family, and being outside amongst nature.

Inge Hübner

Editor at VDE Publishing House

What I do:
Collecting topics to do with automation and digitalisation, editing information about these topics, and communicating it as clearly as possible in our specialist journals: etz, openautomation and Digital Factory Journal. Making contacts, holding interviews, visiting trade fairs, etc.

What I enjoy:
People who are enthusiastic about developing new ideas and bring them to the market with their own strength of conviction and dedication.

What I get up to outside work:
The first thing I do after work is to take my two dogs out into the fields or woods – their positive energy is infectious and I enjoy the peace and quiet.

Stephan Schultz

Product Manager Automation

What I do:
Knowledge of applications, underlying standards, and our customers' everyday work forms the basis of my work, which encompasses a variety of tasks. My work revolves around the specification and marketing of products and solutions for grounding monitoring, Ex i interface technology, and wireless technology. These products ensure that automation can be implemented safely in hazardous areas.

What I enjoy:
Solutions that solve technical challenges, developed in a team of creative minds. People that throw everything they have into achieving a goal and help others along the way.

What I get up to outside work:
During the week, I enjoy dancing and learning about psychology – these hobbies relax both my mind and body. I also enjoy travelling around the southwest regions of the USA. Roaming their remote landscapes never fails to inspire me.

Rico Schulz

Product Manager for Lighting Technology

What I do:
Specification and marketing of products in the Lighting sector, including strategic responsibility and sales support. This requires me to know the market and customer requirements in detail and to monitor technological trends.

What I enjoy:
Light fittings and lighting technology are just a small part of my work. I enjoy the concept of perception and sight, as well as the psychological aspects of lighting technology. The effect of light in all its forms on sight and perception is a great passion of mine. Last but not least, lighting technology has a significant impact on our environment and the plants and animals living around us.

What I get up to outside work:
The topic of light plays a big part in my free time as well – I am a keen photographer and enjoy experimenting with the effect of backlighting. Another passion of mine is travel, which also helps me to develop my photography skills. I love discovering new cultures, people and, most of all, landscapes.

Otto Walch

Laboratory / Standardisation / Certification Coordination

What I do:
1. Coordinating standardisation committees: As well as coordinating the community of R. STAHL employees within the different national and international standardisation committees, I am an active member of several committees myself.
2. Coordinating all R. STAHL laboratories: An important aspect of this role is creating standardised test instructions and implementing inspections that are relevant to standards.
3. International certification: As well as general certification projects, this role involves collecting information and distributing it internally to the different certification departments.

What I enjoy:
The excellent specialised discussions within the standardisation committees. These enable us to work on and distribute the requirements and implementation. This leads to internal discussions which, on one hand, serve to pass on the knowledge we have acquired from the standardisation committees and, on the other hand, enable us to formulate or adjust the standard accordingly, so that it can be understood and implemented. In this role, I maintain relationships with a number of contacts within R. STAHL, a range of international standardisation agencies, and employees from different standardisation committees.

What I get up to outside work:
I enjoy going for long, rambling walks outdoors with my wife. After finishing work, these walks enable me to ensure that my body is also well looked after.
