Condition Monitoring in the Process Industry

Reliable condition monitoring for economic maintenance

Solutions for condition monitoring of machines and systems and the associated predictive maintenance are the main applications of the digitalisation.

Anomalies such as imbalance due to wear are identified at an early stage, thus preventing machine and system failure. The benefits: operating costs go down whilst reliability, efficiency and the life expectancy of machines and systems go up. Industrial condition monitoring involves the measurement of various physical variables e.g. vibration, temperature, humidity, shock, etc.. This data are usually transmitted via communication channels outside of the classic automation pyramid.

More Information

One goal, two technical solutions: condition monitoring by R. STAHL

Suitable gateways are the IS1+ remote I/O system or the classic approach using the HART multiplexer. The condition data transmitted with the aid of the HART signal can be decoupled from the 4...20 mA signals and transmitted via a separate communication channel with both solutions.

But that's not all the remote I/O system can do: both analogue and digital sensor data is captured and transmitted via Ethernet to software platforms for data processing. Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance for machines and systems are the first steps towards a system fit for the industrial digitalisation.
